Hemp Extract vs. CBD Oil
When it comes to researching hemp extract and CBD oil on the internet, you may find these terms are used interchangeably. But are these two terms as different as many people assume?
The truth is that hemp extract and CBD oil are much more similar than they are different. In fact they’re exactly the same as long as the CBD oil is derived from hemp. Ironically, hemp-derived CBD oil and hemp extracts are derived from the stems, stalks, and flowers of the hemp plant. They’re both high in amino acids, antioxidants, omega fatty acids, anti-inflammatory properties, and most importantly they contain cannabinoids such as CBD (Cannabidiol). Perhaps, however, the real confusion comes from the term hemp seed oil (1).
What is hemp seed oil?
Hemp seed oil is derived from the seeds of the hemp plant. Surprisingly, in some cases, it only contains trace amounts of CBD, and depending on the extraction process, it usually doesn’t contain any THC (Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol). This information is often lost in translation when marketing CBD products. When consumers go to buy hemp seed oil, they assume they are getting high levels of CBD, but in reality they may only be getting trace amounts of CBD if any at all. The truth is, hemp seed oil and hemp-derived CBD oil are very different (2,3).
Hemp seed oil is often used as a carrier oil, similar to sunflower seed oil, olive oil, or jojoba oil. In the skincare industry, hemp seed oil holds a lot of value. It contains omega fatty acids, antioxidants, and amino acids, all of which promote healthy, soft, moisturized skin and hair. Additionally, instead of using other carrier oils like MCT oil, hemp seed oil can be infused with CBD.
CBD legal status
According to The 2018 Hemp Farming Act, also known as the Agriculture Improvement Act, hemp containing no more than 0.3 percent of THC is legal in all 50 states. This means hemp-derived CBD is in fact legal, however it still falls in a bit of a grey area regarding regulations from the FDA.
To make matters more complicated, the laws and regulations regarding hemp-derived CBD still vary greatly from state to state. It’s important to research each individual state’s CBD laws and regulations before purchasing any hemp-derived CBD products (4). To see where your state stands with CBD, click here.
