Can CBD Curb The Coronavirus Crisis?
Answer: Not in the way you might think.
For the past few months social media has been flooded with claims that CBD can boost the immune system and therefore prevent and/or treat future diseases and viruses. These claims can be confusing, especially during this unfortunate pandemic we’re now facing. The truth is, there is no conclusive scientific studies that support the idea that CBD can treat the new coronavirus (COVID-19).
But does this mean CBD can’t help ease the effects of this new coronavirus crisis? Well, it depends.
Stress and CBD
People all over the world have been affected by this new pandemic. And many of them are dealing with stress, fear, anxiety, and/or panic every time they venture out of their homes. Because of these uncertain times, some people can fall into a state of constant or frequent stress, which elevates cortisol levels in the body. When cortisol, a stress hormone, takes over our body for a long period of time, it can contribute to a number of health-related issues:
- High blood pressure
It can also contribute to a lack of sleep, which prevents the body from healing and restoring.
Benefits of CBD
While we know there’s no concrete evidence behind CBD and COVID-19, there is evidence that CBD can help ease the symptoms of anxiety, stress, fear, and panic.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), researchers have seen CBD reduce elevated heart rates, stress, and anxiety in animal models. In small clinical trials, researchers also saw a reduction of anxiety in humans. Other studies have shown that CBD helps reduce symptoms associated with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) such as lack of sleep, anxiety, etc. Finally, according to the highly acclaimed Permanente Journal, 72 adults suffering from anxiety and lack of sleep participated in a monthly review of CBD. Within the first month, 57 adults reported feeling less anxious, and 48 adults reported an improvement in their sleep.
Still the question remains, can CBD help boost the immune system?
CBD and the immune system
More research is desperately needed in regards to CBD as an immune booster, but scientists do know that CBD has potent anti-inflammatory properties. According to researchers, persistent inflammation is often behind most infectious diseases. That said, claims that suggest CBD can cure, prevent, or even treat the new coronavirus should be viewed as false. It’s important to note that CBD is not a pharmaceutical drug. If you feel unwell or have flu-like symptoms for any reason, seek medical care immediately.
While we know that CBD holds tremendous therapeutic benefits, it is not and should not be considered a “miracle cure”. However, if you are looking to ease the stress and anxiety during these uncertain times, CBD could be the supplement for you.
